QUEEN ADVERTISEMENT
WITH HUGE CLEAVAGE

Her Majesty appears low-cut in London’s Underground. The artist behind believes that the plunging neckline queen advertises for Denmark.

Deep under Old Street in London, there hangs an advertisement for Denmark. An 8-kroner stamp with Queen Margrethe’s friendly smile is pasted over the head of a particularly low-cut and busty blonde.

“The Denmark is Cool” is the name of the image, and it was created by Danish artist Steffen Kindt. – Now the queen is really at work, and I am very satisfied with that, he declares.

The original title was actually “Dänemark ist geil”, and the picture is part of a series that deals with all the masks women wear behind, Steffen Kindt explains about his work from 2008.

Do we need them?

So, the image should not be seen as a critique of the monarchy, but now that it hangs at Old Street Underground station, and the queen advertises for Denmark, the picture has taken on a new meaning.

I am neither for nor against the monarchy, but I would like to pose the question: “Do we need them?”, says Steffen Kindt. Now that the picture has become an advertisement for Denmark, it has also gained a different and more harmless title, which does not play on the double meaning of the German word “geil”.

In fact, it is Google Translate that has censored the original title a bit, explains Steffen Kindt.

Art on Billboards

The low-cut queen ended up in London’s underground because Steffen Kindt stumbled upon the website artbelow.org.uk, which works to exhibit art on billboards of various kinds.

Originally, Steffen Kindt sent in a different picture, but when Art Below asked for the picture in high resolution, he could not provide it. Art Below then went onto the Danish artist’s website and found the image “Dänemark ist geil”.
