YOUNG PEOPLE DIG STEFFEN KINDT'S EROTIC POP ART

These images make us crave art.

Saarbrücken – Red lips, sparkling breasts, explicit poses: When Steffen Kindt (65) works on a canvas, it gets colorful, risqué – and successful.

“Young people just find my art awesome,” explains the Berlin-born artist, laughing, who has lived in Scandinavia for nearly 40 years. “And that’s why I always make a few prints that are affordable for the youth.” Inspired by Roy Lichtenstein, Kindt mostly paints large-format works. He says, “They are actually incorrect, from the angle and the shadow. They are not right, but they work!” Starting Tuesday, 33 of his paintings will be on display and for sale at Kunsthaus-EX. (Bergstraße 55 in Burbach). “Sex always sells!” says Kindt with a grin. He reveals that he financed his art studies by working as a typesetter at Springer-Verlag – and as a layout designer for the “St. Pauli Nachrichten”. Those looking for a quirky painter in Kindt are mistaken. He is passionate about golf, prefers beer over wine, and says: “I don’t want to have a message, I just want to please!”

COLORFUL POP ART EROTICISM WITHOUT A MESSAGE?

“My pictures should always be attractive, but it’s not about crude sex. Along with the respective title, a story emerges that the viewer can discover for themselves.” The model for the blonde lady seen in Kindt’s works is his wife Wicki (54). They have lived together for 20 years in a “wild marriage” in Copenhagen.

And what does she like about his art? “What mostly young people like: the simplicity, the boldness, and the frivolity!”
